Starting Salary - Step 1 * per CBA $53,788.80

The work involves performing routine manual work requiring physical endurance and willingness to perform a variety of routine and repetitive tasks. Direct supervision is received from a higher-ranking employee who makes work assignments and reviews work completed. Supervision may be the responsibility of this class, part-time, seasonal and inexperienced personnel. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Digs and refills cuts to reach valves, broken lines, new service locations, etc;
  • Operates valves;
  • Paints hydrants and thaws frozen hydrants;
  • Operates pneumatic tools for cutting concrete and asphalt;
  • Assists in main cleaning operations and in pump repair and installations;
  • May perform equipment, building maintenance and grounds tasks when required;
  • Loads crew truck with materials and tools as instructed;
  • Repairs water main lines, hydrants, valves and other equipment in the water distribution system;
  • Inspects and tests hydrants and valves to ensure proper operation, performing maintenance and repair as required;
  • Completes routine reports regarding maintenance and repair activities, work orders and other forms;
  • Sets up flashers, barriers and other safety equipment and apparatus to ensure required safety practices and procedures at the work sites are maintained;
  • Operates various motorized vehicles and equipment to deliver supplies and materials to and from work sites, including backhoes, loaders, pumps, etc. at the work site to excavate, move material and backfill excavations;
  • Reads maps and drawings to locate valves and water mains;
  • Performs a variety of related manual tasks.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Willingness to learn the tools, terminology and practices of the water distribution system; ability to make a variety of simple repairs and adjustments; ability to lift; willingness to perform routine manual work; willingness to work under all weather conditions and long hours in emergencies. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or a high school equivalency diploma, and be able to perform moderately heavy physical labor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License at the time of appointment.

Eligibility for a Class B Commercial Driver’s License in New York State required at time of appointment and possession of the license prior to the completion of the probationary period.
